Family mauled by pet pit bull were “just trying to make him wear a sweater”
A Florida family in Tampa were mauled by their pet dog, a pit bull cross, after they tried to put a sweater on him, according to local authorities.
The incident occurred last Friday (December 30) when 52-year old Brenda Guerrero went outside her family’s home in the 3400 block of Cord Street around 2:30 p.m. She was concerned about the low temperature and didn’t want the family’s pit bull, named Scarface, to suffer through a chilly night.
However, things took a turn for the worse when Scarface, who was not impressed with the idea of wearing a sweater, began to attack Mrs Guerrero, causing her to call for help.
Hearing the disturbance, her husband rushed from the house and tried to pull the dog off his wife. However, this attempt failed and Scarface began attacking Mr Guerrero as well.
Mrs Guerrero’s 22-year old son then rushed in and stabbed the dog, according to police. He was attacked in the commotion, but the distraction allowed the trio to escape into the house, where they phoned for police help.
When county animal control officers and police arrived, they shot the dog with a tranquillizer gun. However, Scarface was not deterred by this and managed to enter the residence.
According to authorities, “a bean bag gun, taser and catch pole” had to be used to stop Scarface and allow the animal control officers to capture him.
Both Mr & Mrs Guerrero were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Medical staff have reported that Mrs Guerrero’s injuries were serious, but not life-threatening. The injuries to the two male victims were reportedly minor.
It’s not immediately clear what will become of Scarface: as of press time, he remains in the county pound.
